Since 1971, Starbucks lovers have seen the design progression of the Siren woman on their coffee cups. Though her design has changed, she has always been a permanent fixture in the cup’s design. Back in 1971, she was incorporated in a large brown label with a plethora of text. On her first redesign in 1987, she was altered into a modern version featuring a white Siren against a black background surrounded by a green ring. In 1992, slight changes were made to the logo including a lighter colored green ring and a zoomed in version of the Siren’s face.
Well for 2011, Starbucks has announced yet another makeover for their coffee bean Siren. In an attempt to simplify their brands design, the only graphic on the coffee cup will be the Siren’s face sans green ring. Popsop.com reports on this design upgrade stating that, “Starbucks is the biggest coffee chain on the international market and is highly recognizable all around the globe, so they don’t need to remind their consumers who they are on every corner.” Though I miss the old design with the green ring, I can appreciate what the chain is attempting to achieve. However, I am interested to see what the public’s reaction will be to the Starbucks logo redesign. Will the new Siren, sans ring, be embraced or criticized as the Gap logo redesign was back in October?
