The number of young, imaginative brands entering the wine market is increasing as millennials are developing interest in wine. Since companies in the wine industry spend less on advertising and more on the wine itself, packaging and label design are essential for standing out in a crowd. Wine labels are starting to move away from traditional and distinguished design and more toward youthful, out-there labels. Consumers are familiar with seeing illustrative and original designs used on craft beer cans and bottles in the aisles of stores. These designs incline consumers to photograph their bottles for their social media feed. Making unconventional wine labels will help your wine stand out and brands should follow suit in order to stay relevant.

The variety of wine is no longer the sole reason for a consumer to purchase it. The art is just as important. A majority of new brands are developing their personality to reflect the art of the label. Here are a few wine label trends that are currently booming in the wine industry:
1. Image-Driven: A label with larger images and graphics is more likely to grab consumer’s attention than a label cluttered with text. Using images is a great storytelling technique for wineries who want the opportunity to voice their story.
2. Make it Shimmer and Shine: Many wine brands with simply designed wine labels have added a dash of elegance by using metallic silver and gold foils. The foil creates depth and adds richness to a label. The Dona Martina 2014 Chardonnay by
Rancho Vinedo Vineyard is an example of how using minimal gold foil can add a high-end look to your label. The gold foil is not overwhelming, only bordering the bold text of the vineyard, and balances the black and white illustration in the background.
3. Black on Black: Dark labels on dark bottles look sophisticated and allow the contrasting colors of the text to stand out. Some vineyards create an all-black design, making each element stand out by using selective varnishes or other printing effects.
Subterra uses a selective varnish to create a gritty look with their label. The skeleton is a simple graphic, yet resonates with the brand’s personality and makes the brand easily recognizable to its consumers.
