The Psychology of Color for Labels and Packaging

Gina Lisella • Dec 05, 2023

Designing a label can be an involved process; logos, fonts, layout, material, and finish all must be taken into account. Then there’s the product-specific copy and information to include. It’s easy to get hung up on any or all of these things, but don’t forget to consider the importance of color selection While you may be choosing your colors based on your product or on your own color preference, you always want to make sure your colors are communicating the right thing to potential customers.

Many studies throughout the years have revealed that our brains prefer recognizable brands, which makes color incredibly important when creating a brand identity. It has even been suggested that it is of paramount importance for new brands to specifically target logo colors that ensure differentiation from entrenched competitors (if the competition all uses blue, you'll stand out by using purple).

When it comes to picking the "right" color, research has found that “predicting consumer reaction to color appropriateness in relation to the product is far more important than the individual color itself. So, if Harley owners buy the product in order to feel rugged, you could assume that the pink glitter edition wouldn't sell all that well.”

Color has a powerful influence on a buyer’s perception of a product and can play a huge role in how someone chooses to exercise his or her purchasing power. When it comes to labels and packaging in particular, color selection is especially important. There are emotional and psychological responses that certain colors evoke for people. Reds and yellows inspire appetite while green relates to health and sustainability. There are mountains of research about the psychology of color in relation to marketing products, but the important thing is to pick the colors that are right for your company and then stick with them. (Check out this article from colorpsychology.org for more information on color psychology and a cool infographic that shows the logos and colors of big brands).

Of course, simply choosing a color like red that is known to make people feel hungry is not going to create an automatic demand for your product. What’s really important is selecting colors that reflect your brand values so customers instantly associate your product with your value proposition. For example, if you’re an aspirational life-style brand that focuses on the well-being of your customers, perhaps you opt for a neutral color palette that reflects your carefully selected natural ingredients.

Whatever route you take with regard to your color, it will pay to deeply consider who you are as a company and how to best communicate your brand identity. Once you’ve figured out what’s right for you, using colors effectively in your label design is a simple way to attract more consumers and create brand loyalists.

Opting for the appropriate colors for your brand is only half the battle though—they need to be printed with impeccable quality and consistency to effectively incentivize buyers. Luckily, Dion Label Printing is here to ensure outstanding color on every label we print.

Our color matching process begins in our Prepress department, goes through our Quality Assurance team, and is continued in production as our techs use software, photo spectrometers, and their own well-trained eyes to make sure your colors print beautifully and on-brand. Over the last several years, our parent company Inovar has acquired new facilities at a quick pace, including, most recently: Cimarron Label in Sioux Falls, SD and Amherst Label in Milford, NH. Acquiring is a major part of Inovar’s strategy to grow the company and better serve our customers and our internal teams, and we are concurrently working to expand our capacity, capabilities, and service offerings in other ways. To that end Inovar has recently moved into a newly renovated headquarters building in Dallas, TX. Located just a short distance from Inovar’s previous facility headquarters, the new location was built to showcase the mission of our brand. At triple the size of the last facility, this brand new building with its huge increase in both office and production space will enable us to provide even more solutions and support to our customers. The new facility is not just larger, however. In order to increase our capacity, capabilities, and offerings, and give our customers the highest quality labels and packaging solutions, we’ve added two new flexographic presses and a new digital press. Our Director of Marketing, Ashley Stewart, states, “the additional capacity, services, and embellishment capabilities will greatly increase our ability to meet all the requirements of even the most demanding brands. The team is thrilled to debut the new facility and showcase our capabilities to our existing and future customers.” We also have other expansions in the works. An addition of almost 20,000 additional square feet of production and warehousing space will expand Inovar’s Milwaukee, WI, location, Flexo-Graphics, and its presence in the area. As more states legalize the recreational use of cannabis, the growth projections may make established and hopeful cannabis brands optimistic for a surge in sales; the industry, however, faces a number of unique challenges. Strict regulations that vary from state to state as well as a surge in counterfeit products entering the market are two potential factors that could inhibit potential growth for cannabis brands. One of the best ways to both take advantage of the market growth and meet prospective challenges is with your product label. But not just any old label will do. You need a top-quality label that stands out from the competition. The experts at Dion Label Printing are here to help you create the best cannabis product label for your brand with these three solutions: 1. Specialty Solutions Another wonderful way to differentiate yourself as a cannabis company is through specialty packaging. While there are many factors that go into consumer buying decisions, packaging shape and overall look and feel play an extremely important role, especially in the vast and varied cannabis industry. Uniquely shaped product containers and packaging make a huge impact on potential customers and are sometimes required for cannabis products. However, labeling a container that is not a standard size or shape can be difficult or nearly impossible. Shrink sleeves offer the perfect solution. A shrink sleeve is a 360-degree printed piece of film that shrinks with heat or steam to fit around various shaped containers. Shrink sleeves can be designed to cover an entire product container or only a portion of the container. Consumers are drawn to out-of-the-ordinary containers, and when competition is fierce, a unique container with a perfectly fitted shrink sleeve can be a spectacular way to outpace the competition. Learn more about some of the unique advantages shrink sleeves provide for cannabis brands here . Dion Label Printing has another versatile solution for cannabis brands: flexible packaging. With our eleven nationwide locations, our range of capabilities is vast. The benefits flexible packaging offers to consumers are many, and we offer a variety of flexible packaging options like sample pouches, single-serve pouches and more. Our flexible packaging options enable your art to be the packaging, and flexible packaging options can complement the design and branding of your other products with traditional labels. We carry FDA-approved materials and offer a variety of size options. Learn more about flexible packaging here. 3. Unparalleled Quality In any growing industry, the quality of the label and packaging you use for your products are essential. Peeling or illegible labels or broken-down packaging do not inspire consumer confidence. There are innumerable sources for labels and packaging in this digital age, but just as you don’t source your product from irreputable sellers, you need to find a label supplier you can trust. Quality labels begin with selecting the proper materials for your product and your brand. Our experts will ask you the right questions and help you find the materials that will work with your application, design, and budget. We have a dedicated prepress department (this is the printing term for art department) who will work with you every step of the way to make sure your design, product and ingredient description, and any other information on your label is perfect. Once you sign off on your final art proofs, your label will receive a 50+ point check as it moves through production, and further checks after printing is complete from our quality control department. Dion Label Printing is uniquely poised to provide unparalleled quality labels and packaging for cannabis companies of all kinds. We have been providing superior quality cannabis labels for years. We are a trusted partner of many large cannabis companies, and we know the ins and outs of packaging for the industry. In a market where the potential for success is huge but competition is fierce, make sure you have a top-quality label to achieve your goals. Contact us now to get started.
