Unique from other labels, OTC pharmaceutical labels are especially dependent upon quality, accuracy, and detailed documentation. To ensure compliance is met, Dion is registered with the FDA and compliant with both FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11 which regulates security of electronic records.
We offer a wide variety of solutions to our partners in the OTC Pharmaceutical field, including extended content options, security features, and GMI Certification. Discover the various ways we can help you find the right label and packaging options for your brand.
Extended Content Labels, also known as ECLs and Expanded Content Labels, are extremely effective tools for OTC Pharmaceutical companies. While traditional labels are printed on one side of a piece of material, ECLs give you more space for a wide variety of information and can free space up on the front of your label for branding and essential product information.
With so much regulatory information to include, extended content labels are an excellent solution for OTC Pharmaceutical manufacturers.
Dion Label Printing offers a variety of extended content labels, which we break down below.
WRAPAROUND LABELS
Wraparound labels offer 720 degrees of print space for your label. They provide more real estate for print without the extra panels associated with booklet labels. As their name suggests, these labels wrap around a vessel twice; once a customer has peeled the label back, we use our read and re-apply construction so they can be neatly closed again.
Wraparound labels are sometimes referred to as vial labels because they are an ideal option for products in smaller containers. Some of the common vessel sizes we print wraparound labels for are 4mL, 10mL, and 15mL. We can print these labels on white or silver material.
PEEL BACK LABELS
Peel back labels, also called two-sided or double-sided labels, are an extended content label type used for additional printed information on the back side of a label.
Peel back labels have information printed on both sides with a read and re-apply label construction. The label can be peeled back from the container to reveal additional information and then re-applied as if it was never disturbed. Peel back labels are an easy open and re-sealable option that provide a complete solution to additional space requirements without excess packaging.
BOOKLET LABELS
Booklet labels, also known as hinged labels or commonly referred to simply as ECLs, are labels that use a hinged design with one or more extra panels to increase the amount of printable space available for information, while the amount of surface space the label takes up in the container remains the same.
Generally speaking, booklet labels provide more extra printable space than peel back labels, which use only the back side of the label for additional information.
Booklet labels use a read and re-apply label construction that allows the interior panel or panels of the label to be viewed, then resealed. These labels are ideal for extended drug facts, additional languages, directions, and much more.
As with all of our label solutions, we provide extended content labels that are customized to fit your unique needs. Material selection, label size, number of print colors, and number of internal panels are just a few of the considerations that will factor into your individual price.

When people are going to be consuming your product, it is essential that you follow federal guidelines to make sure your label includes all the appropriate information formatted properly.
We are compliant to FDA Title 21 CFR Part 11 and the EU’s EMEA Annex 11.
Our Prepress Department includes a team of detail-oriented individuals who have decades of experience working with OTC companies and know how to recognize when something doesn't look right. They review all label art and will make suggestions to you if something doesn't look like it will meet regulatory standards.
We also offer these options to help ensure your label is safe and secure:
Dion Label Printing is proud to be the first Graphic Measures International (GMI) Certified printer in the country for both digital and flexographic label printing since March 2014.
The certification helps measure color standards through the label printing process while at the facility, and also provides control on retail shelves to ensure uniformity. GMI provides large name brands, such as Walgreens and Target, with global packaging consistency.
Along with guaranteed color consistency, our GMI Certification assures you of predictable packaging results that help maintain brand identity. When such a large percentage of consumer buying choices are made based on quick packaging judgements, especially color, it’s hard to overvalue the importance of printing your labels with a company that will get your colors right, every time.
For OTC Pharmaceutical companies, having a label that communicates quality is essential, and label material is an integral part of a quality label. But how do you know which material will work for you? Dion Label Printing uses only the best stock material available, and our experts will guide you to the appropriate material for your product and application.
Films are probably the most versatile label material option, and the most popular among OTC pharma brands. BOPP has a unique set of characteristics that make it optimal for a huge variety of applications. It is a sturdy, fatigue and moisture resistant material, so if your product will be handled frequently or exposed to moisture or temperature changes, BOPP provides the ruggedness you need. We offer BOPP in white, metallic, and clear options.
Typically, the most cost-effective and simple labeling material, a paper label could be appropriate for your OTC products. If your product is not going to be subjected to environmental stresses such as moisture and your primary concern is straightforwardness and cost, a paper label may be just what you’re looking for. Paper is a great option for pill and capsule products. As with BOPP, we offer several different paper material options other than just white, including metallic options.
At Dion, we have worked over the last several years to provide more sustainable options for the brands we partner with. Many of our materials are certified sustainable. And it’s not just our basic paper materials that have met this certification: some of our textured linen and estate options are certified sustainable too.
We also offer labels made from different amounts of post-consumer waste, including 100%
post-consumer waste material.
While some sustainable label material options do have an increased cost associated with them, having less of a negative impact on the environment and having more of a positive impact on potential customers may make these labels worth it for your brand.
Flexible packaging offers many benefits to OTC Pharmaceutical brands. We offer a variety of flexible packaging options. For all of them, we print the material with your artwork and information, ship them to you in rolls, and you (or your filler) fills and seals them.
We carry FDA-approved materials and offer a variety of size options. Single serve and sample pouches can be used for powders, pills, liquids, and many other products. Flexible packaging is an excellent way to give your product a high level of shelf appeal, and Dion Label Printing is one of the only North American packaging companies to offer both digital and flexographic printing for flexible packaging.
A shrink sleeve is a 360-degree printed piece of film that shrinks with heat or steam to fit around various shaped containers. Shrink sleeves can be designed to cover an entire product container or only a portion of the container. We can print shrink sleeves both digitally and flexographically, which offers a unique packaging solution for all applications. Because of their 360-degree print surface, shrink sleeves maximize real estate for design and product information.
Shrink sleeves are perfectly suited to unique containers, as they snugly hug the contours of packaging and enable potential customers to experience the full effect of a special container. They can also provide security measures to your product by covering the top portion and being equipped with a perforated tamper evident seal.
One of the most common uses for shrink sleeves among OTC Pharmaceutical brands is for twin packs of product. You can learn more about
the unique benefits shrink sleeves provide here.
