How To Choose The Right Label Material

From those entirely new to product labeling to those with years of experience, sometimes choosing the material for your label can seem overwhelming. You want a material that will be sturdy enough to resist peeling or tearing while your product is in use. You also want the amazing design you’ve chosen to represent your brand and products to be vibrant and appealing. And because you are, after all, a business, the cost of the material matters to you. So how do you reconcile the different goals you want to accomplish with your label, and how do you know which material will work for you?

We offer a huge variety of label material combinations here at Dion Label Printing. Not only does the base material you use for your label matter, but coating and adhesive choices play an integral role in the look and functionality as well. But fear not! You don’t need to worry about the technical specifications of your label—that’s what your Label Solutions Specialists are here for. Instead, here are a few factors to keep in mind when considering your label material:

  • Look: What look are you going for? A textured paper material can be used to create a high-end label look or a more natural feel depending on your label design. A metallic film is just as versatile, appropriate for applications from candles to supplement products and beyond. With our vast selection of material and coating options, whatever design and brand identity you want to show off with your label, we’ve got you covered.

  • Environment: Will your labels be exposed to an environment other than a retail shelf? Environment is a huge factor in material selection. If your product will be labeled or stored somewhere that is hot and humid or cold and excessively dry, make sure to let us know. Sun exposure, refrigeration, temperature, and moisture levels will all play a significant role in helping us decide which material, coating, and adhesive combination will be right for you.

  • Product: Every product is different, and both the product itself and the way it is used will have implications on the appropriate label material. Is your product a liquid or spray? Oils and sprays can drip on and eat away at some materials over time. Will it be handled frequently and thrown in a bag to carry along with a customer? The more details we have about your product and its use, the better we’ll be able to direct you to a material that is sturdy enough to resist wear and tear.

  • Container: What are your labels being applied to? Coated papers, glass, and plastic each have their own considerations and will interact differently with different materials and adhesives.

  • Imprinting & Writability: Many of our large OTC pharmaceutical and supplement customers need to print batch numbers and expiration dates on their labels before they ship out the final product. And many of our smaller craft food, beverage, and home product brands will write in pertinent information like flavor or creation date right on their labels. A few label materials can be printed and written on directly, but most will need a specific coating to ensure the print doesn’t smudge. Make sure to let us know any plans you have for writing or printing on your label after we ship it to you!

Regardless of your product, its use, where it will be stored, or your design goals, the team of Label Solutions Specialists at Dion will guide you to the proper material combination for you. We offer free comprehensive sample packets, specifically tailored to your label project. Contact us today and we can help you narrow down the options!

Designing a label can be an involved process; logos, fonts, layout, material, and finish all must be taken into account. Then there’s the product-specific copy and information to include. It’s easy to get hung up on any or all of these things, but don’t forget to consider the importance of color selection While you may be choosing your colors based on your product or on your own color preference, you always want to make sure your colors are communicating the right thing to potential customers.

As part of Inovar Packaging Group, Dion Label Printing is working to creating a world-class enterprise by building an innovative platform to drive sustainable growth and handle the increasingly complex demands of our diverse range of customers. Over the last several years, our parent company Inovar has acquired new facilities at a quick pace, including, most recently: Cimarron Label in Sioux Falls, SD and Amherst Label in Milford, NH. Acquiring is a major part of Inovar’s strategy to grow the company and better serve our customers and our internal teams, and we are concurrently working to expand our capacity, capabilities, and service offerings in other ways. To that end Inovar has recently moved into a newly renovated headquarters building in Dallas, TX. Located just a short distance from Inovar’s previous facility headquarters, the new location was built to showcase the mission of our brand. At triple the size of the last facility, this brand new building with its huge increase in both office and production space will enable us to provide even more solutions and support to our customers. The new facility is not just larger, however. In order to increase our capacity, capabilities, and offerings, and give our customers the highest quality labels and packaging solutions, we’ve added two new flexographic presses and a new digital press. Our Director of Marketing, Ashley Stewart, states, “the additional capacity, services, and embellishment capabilities will greatly increase our ability to meet all the requirements of even the most demanding brands. The team is thrilled to debut the new facility and showcase our capabilities to our existing and future customers.” We also have other expansions in the works. An addition of almost 20,000 additional square feet of production and warehousing space will expand Inovar’s Milwaukee, WI, location, Flexo-Graphics, and its presence in the area. We are excited for the opportunities our growth provides us to continue our rise as a premier label and packaging solution provider. Contact us today and let our growth help fuel yours.
