Plastic Bottles for Recycling

Sustainability is something we take seriously, and we know you do too. Whether you're new to sustainable packaging solutions or have been committed to sustainable practices for years, the experts at Dion Label Printing will help you find the right option for your brand and application. In this series we are going to discuss three of the ways we can help you make more sustainable label and packaging choices. Today’s topic is about how to make your packaging recyclable, and in the coming weeks we will also discuss how to use recycled materials and reduce your packaging.

While the recycling stream can seem opaque, our membership in the Association of Plastic Recyclers provides us with the latest information on how to select the right packaging for your sustainability goals and requirements. Once we've talked about your primary packaging container, we can then guide you to the right pressure sensitive label material, ink, and adhesion to ensure your product can be recycled. Here is a breakdown of some of the most common container materials and what label materials you should use to make your packaging recyclable.

1. PET containers with pressure sensitive labels

During recycling, pressure sensitive labels (think of a traditional sticky label) and the ink separate from the bottle and float. We recommend using BOPP material (learn more about BOPP here) with hot caustic inks and wash-off adhesives. Paper, PVC, or PLA materials are not recommended with PET containers.

It’s important to keep in mind that if your container is 550 mL or less, the label cannot exceed 55% of the surface area. If your container is larger than 550 mL, the label cannot exceed over 75% of the surface area.

2. Glass and aluminum containers with pressure sensitive labels

In North America, for glass and aluminum containers, the label or decoration remains on the container and is melted down to be recycled. There is a good amount of freedom in label material selection for glass and aluminum primary packaging because the labels will be removed during the crushing process and/or burned off during the melting process. BOPP or other film labels, paper, and decorative options can all be used on aluminum and glass containers. If you want to have more of a positive impact on the environment, we’d recommend combining your glass or aluminum container with a PCW recycled label material, which you can learn more about here.

3. HDPE multi-colored containers with pressure sensitive labels

When recycling multi-colored bottles, including white ones, the label stays with the bottle during the process. The containers, along with their labels, are cleaned, shredded, and used to form new items. We recommend using any BOPP, PE film, or Polyolefin with acrylic emulsion adhesive and hot caustic inks. PVC and paper label materials are not recommended as they become pulp during the recycling process.

4. PET and HDPE containers with shrink sleeves

In most cases, the shrink sleeves can stay on PET and HDPE bottles and the inks wash away. The containers, along with their sleeves, are cleaned, shredded, and used to create new items. We recommend using water soluble inks on shrink sleeves. A zipper perforation is another option to safeguard the recycling stream and allow the sleeve to be fully removed from the container prior to recycling.

Dion Label Printing has a true commitment to sustainability, as evidenced by our membership in the Association of Plastic Recyclers, bi-weekly sustainability meetings with our leadership team, and concerted efforts to guide our customers to sustainable choices. Be sure to check back in next week to learn about the recycled label materials we offer.

Designing a label can be an involved process; logos, fonts, layout, material, and finish all must be taken into account. Then there’s the product-specific copy and information to include. It’s easy to get hung up on any or all of these things, but don’t forget to consider the importance of color selection While you may be choosing your colors based on your product or on your own color preference, you always want to make sure your colors are communicating the right thing to potential customers.

As part of Inovar Packaging Group, Dion Label Printing is working to creating a world-class enterprise by building an innovative platform to drive sustainable growth and handle the increasingly complex demands of our diverse range of customers. Over the last several years, our parent company Inovar has acquired new facilities at a quick pace, including, most recently: Cimarron Label in Sioux Falls, SD and Amherst Label in Milford, NH. Acquiring is a major part of Inovar’s strategy to grow the company and better serve our customers and our internal teams, and we are concurrently working to expand our capacity, capabilities, and service offerings in other ways. To that end Inovar has recently moved into a newly renovated headquarters building in Dallas, TX. Located just a short distance from Inovar’s previous facility headquarters, the new location was built to showcase the mission of our brand. At triple the size of the last facility, this brand new building with its huge increase in both office and production space will enable us to provide even more solutions and support to our customers. The new facility is not just larger, however. In order to increase our capacity, capabilities, and offerings, and give our customers the highest quality labels and packaging solutions, we’ve added two new flexographic presses and a new digital press. Our Director of Marketing, Ashley Stewart, states, “the additional capacity, services, and embellishment capabilities will greatly increase our ability to meet all the requirements of even the most demanding brands. The team is thrilled to debut the new facility and showcase our capabilities to our existing and future customers.” We also have other expansions in the works. An addition of almost 20,000 additional square feet of production and warehousing space will expand Inovar’s Milwaukee, WI, location, Flexo-Graphics, and its presence in the area. We are excited for the opportunities our growth provides us to continue our rise as a premier label and packaging solution provider. Contact us today and let our growth help fuel yours.
