PET LABELS

THE PET INDUSTRY IS AN EVER-EXPANDING MARKET WITH BIG COMPETITION AND COMPANIES VARYING FROM ALL NATURAL BRANDS TO BIG-BOX BRANDS.

According to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), approximately $95.7 billion was spent on our pets in the United States in 2019. That amount has continued to rise as in many households, pets are considered members of the family.

Pet product labels have to pull double duty. In addition to catching the consumer’s eye on the shelf, pet product labels also need to be durable and stand up to wear and tear. Our extensive experience allows us to make the best recommendations for a professional, functional label. Discover the various ways we can help you find the right label and packaging options for your brand.

MATERIAL SELECTION

As more and more people are prioritizing the purchase of pet products, especially those that improve their pets’ health and wellness, your label needs to communicate to potential customers exactly what type of brand you are. If your label is peeling, out of registration, or has faded colors, there’s a good chance a customer will skip right past your product on the shelf and move to one of the many others.

Luckily, Dion can help make sure you have the right label, whether your product is a bag of treats or a bottle of pet shampoo. The experts at Dion are here to break down some popular material options for pet product labels and some of the key benefits of each.

FILM (AKA BOPP) – RUGGED, VERSATILE, DESIGN OPTIONS

Films are the most versatile label material option, and the most popular among pet brands, and for good reason! BOPP is a rugged, waterproof material that is ideal for products that are exposed to liquid; such as when giving your dog a bath! It is also sturdy yet flexible and ideal if your product will be handled frequently such as for a salve or shampoo. BOPP provides the ruggedness you need to keep up with your active pet. We offer BOPP in white, metallic, and clear options.

PAPER – COST-EFFECTIVE, STRAIGHTFORWARD, DESIGN OPTIONS

Typically the most cost-effective and simple labeling material, paper, has plenty of uses for pet products. If you are creating a dry pet product that will not be exposed to moisture, chemicals or excessive drool, then a paper label would be an excellent option. Paper is perfect for a treat bag or supplement product that is in pill or powder form. As with BOPP, we offer several different paper material options other than just white, including metallic options.

SUSTAINABLE OPTIONS – ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, certified sustainable, POST-CONSUMER WASTE

At Dion, we have worked over the last several years to provide more sustainable options for the brands we partner with. Many of our materials are certified sustainable. And it’s not just our basic paper materials that have met this certification: some of our textured linen and estate options are certified sustainable too!

We also offer labels made from different amounts of post-consumer waste, including 100% post-consumer waste material. As with standard paper, we would suggest sustainable paper options only for dry pet products such as treats or supplements. While some sustainable label material options do have an increased cost associated with them, having less of a negative impact on the environment and having more of a positive impact on potential customers may make these labels worth it for your brand.

EXTENDED CONTENT LABELS

Extended Content Labels, also known as ECLs and Expanded Content Labels, are highly popular for pet supplement bottles and containers. While traditional labels are printed on one side of a piece of material, ECLs will give you more space for a wide variety of information and can free space up on the front of your label for branding and essential product information.

With so much information to include, as well as design considerations to make your label as attractive as possible in this competitive industry, extended content labels are an excellent solution for pet supplements and other pet products.

Dion Label Printing offers a variety of extended content labels, which we break down below:

TYPES OF EXTENDED CONTENT LABELS

WRAPAROUND LABELS

Wraparound labels offer 720 degrees of print space for your label design. They provide more real estate for print without the extra panels associated with booklet labels. As their name suggests, these labels wrap around a vessel twice; once a customer has peeled the label back, we use our read and re-apply construction so they can be neatly closed again.

Wraparound labels are sometimes referred to as vial labels because they are an ideal option for products in smaller containers. Some of the common vessel sizes we print wraparound labels for are 4mL, 10mL, and 15mL. We can print these labels on white or silver material.

PEEL BACK LABELS

Peel back labels, also called two-sided or double-sided labels, are an extended content label type used for additional printed information on the back side of a label.

Peel back labels have information printed on both sides with a read and re-apply label construction. The label can be peeled back from the container to reveal additional information and then re-applied as if it was never disturbed. Peel back labels are an easy open and re-sealable option that provide a complete solution to additional space requirements without excess packaging.

BOOKLET LABELS

Booklet labels, also known as hinged labels or commonly referred to simply as ECLs, are labels that use a hinged design with one or more extra panels to increase the amount of printable space available for information, while the amount of surface space the label takes up in the container remains the same.

Generally speaking, booklet labels provide more extra printable space than peel back labels, which use only the back side of the label for additional information.

Booklet labels use a read and re-apply label construction that allows the interior panel or panels of the label to be viewed, then resealed. These labels are ideal for extended drug facts, additional languages, directions, and much more.

DESIGN CONCEPTS

Design concepts and trends change annually but there are a few classic designs that will remain permanent. Minimalistic designs are popular across all industries and are ideal for creating a sophisticated, luxury pet product. Another is an upscale, decorative design which could be achieved through adding metallic elements or a matte finish to your pet label. Read more about pet label trends on our blog.

COLOR CHOICES

Color choices set the tone for a product collection as it is often the first interaction a customer has with your brand. Brands will often use different colors to differentiate products in their line based on type or flavor. There are so many options based on your overall product line design. Bright, bold colors will give off a fun youthful vibe, while natural tones are ideal for an earthy, organic brand. SINGLE SERVE PACKETS

Packets are an optimal choice for pet food and supplement products to provide easy-to-dose, on the go packaging. Proper dosing is especially important for supplements and medicine for pets that often require smaller amounts than one might think. Single serve packets that contain 2 chewable pills is a convenient option for consumers to easily pack in a backpack for a trip to the park. Similarly, single serve packets provide consumers with the option to try a product before shelling out the cost of a full sized container. Many of our customer choose single serve packets to try out a new flavor or varietal and will offer samples to customers with a full size product purchase.

SHRINK SLEEVES

Design space is important for pet products and shrink sleeves offer extra room to showcase your product through packaging. Shrink sleeves provide a 360 degree design space and are ideal for odd shaped bottles or containers. Extra space can be used for required text and information including ingredients, nutrition facts and instructions. Shrink sleeves can also have a built in security seal if they extend over the cap of the product. By using a perforation, the sleeve can be removed from the cap after opening while maintaining the integrity of the body of the sleeve. The safety and health of our pets is of utmost importance to the Dion team and we are here to provide you with the tools to do so!
